In other words, “Jews and Samaritans don’t hang out together and they certainly don’t drink together, remember? Men and women aren’t even supposed to speak in public to one another; why are you talking to me?” Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” In other words, “Dear one, what I’m asking for is simply a chance to give you what you are really looking for. I know you are thirsty–thirsty for something you won’t find in this well.”
