Granny's
House
Granny's House is an integral part of our Sunday School program at
Joelton with the goal of enriching our children's Bible study through
exploring topics and extending understandings. Each class visits on a
rotating basis on Sunday morning during the Sunday School hour. The
schedule appears in the bulletin quarterly with reminders each week.
The room is attractively decorated as the front of a house. Granny in
her white apron sits in her chair ready to welcome the class. The
children sit on the floor or in small chairs as the age appropriate
activities begin. The walls are painted with a variety of scenes
including a farm. A sheep with a wooly coat is an inviting place for the
youngsters to explore as their hands run through its coat. A plastic
flower on the wall is always sniffed and the children are sure that it
has a wonderful aroma. The room challenges all the senses!
Children are taught a Bible lesson relating to the general studies of
that class. Hands-on activities vary from puppet shows, tasting Bible
foods, drawing murals, making crafts, viewing video clips, to three year
olds playing in a large tub of rice. A wardrobe of Bible clothes is
available to use in role playing as we portray Bible stories.
During our winter celebration, the children bring gifts to be shared
with those less fortunate. The toys are a welcome addition to our
Christmas Blitz. Not only to families receive a food basket but toys as
well. As the children bring their gift each child is photographed with
Granny and their Sunday School teacher. These photographs are cherished
as they are kept through the years.
The atmosphere is always warm and inviting with each child receiving
smiles and hugs from Granny. They leave with a treat in hand and a big
smile. One question is repeatedly heard from the children...
"When can we come back to Granny's House??"
